Hapkido utilizes a belt system to divide the learning process into groups of techniques. A Hapkido student must display a certain level of proficiency in each technique before testing and being promoted to the next rank. Each rank contains striking, punching and kicking techniques, which progress with each rank. For instance, you must learn a side kick before you begin to learn a spin side kick or a jump side kick. The grappling and joint locks build on each other in this order:
